Today was already looking to be a great day for Keagan, she didn’t know why but for some reason Kyle had let her out of the house. It wasn’t everyday that she got that kind of treatment, he must have been in a really good mood or something, but nevertheless, she used the opportunity to head out to the mall to meet up with some of her acquaintances from school. She had never really had the chance to really get to know anyone there, since she wasn’t allowed to do much of anything, thanks to her cousin. He was very strict with what he let her do and who he let her talk to. Of course he couldn’t control her when she was at school and those were usually the days that she cherished, but during the summer it was hard for her to get out and socialize like a normal teenager. Of course there was nothing normal about Keagan’s life. Her parents had died three years ago in a horrific accident and she had no other family out there save for her older cousin Kyle. If she had known what it was going to be like here, she probably would have run away before the state could place her with him. She had known Kyle when they were younger, just being toddlers and young children. Their families drifted apart as they got older and Keagan hadn’t seen him in years, until the death of her uncle where she saw him at his father’s funeral. Then it would be another two years before she saw him again when she was moving her things in to his house. It only took a few days before her nightmare got worse.
Shuddering at the thought, she pressed her lips together and tried to wash away the torrid thoughts. Her feet smacked against the pavement as she approached the mall. She had sent a simple text to a few friends of hers that were meeting her there, they had invited her when they saw her out with Kyle several days earlier at the grocery store, and Kyle being the person that he was, couldn’t deny the pretty girls some quality time with Keagan, as much as he hated it. She knew that he did, it was all over his face when they got home. He didn’t like her being out, he didn’t like her having friends and he didn’t like not having absolute control of her. Though, he made it clear that she wasn’t to do anything funny or he would find out. He had friends that were always out and about and they would be quick to call Kyle up if they saw her doing anything that he didn’t deem appropriate for his seventeen year old cousin. Licking her lips, she pulled the doors of the mall open and looked around until she found the group of girls that she was looking for. She gave a shy wave as she ducked her head and moved to meet them, giving them simple hellos as they dragged her away to start their mall adventure. It didn’t take long for them to wander in to one of the larger department stores and the group of girls filtered out to look at different things. Keagan went off by herself, looking around at some clothes before moving towards the shoes. She had always had a soft spot for sneakers, she didn’t know why really, but she liked having different colored sneakers to match her outfits, it was just something that she had always been in to since she was younger. Getting lost in the row of colorful sneakers, she was pretty much in her glory right now, her fingers grazing over the different sizes trying to find the right ones for herself.
